Dark stain can help minimize the appearance of light water damage marks on oak, but it won't completely hide severe damage or raised grain.

Water damage on oak flooring creates two main issues: surface discoloration and grain raising from moisture penetration. Dark stains like ebony, jacobean, or dark walnut are excellent at masking surface stains and light watermarks because they create uniform color coverage. The darker pigments essentially "overpower" the lighter water stains, making them much less noticeable.

However, dark stain cannot fix structural damage from water exposure.
